Afghanistan: Suicide attack kills 13 US troops

The BBC’s Quentin Sommerville: ”Those buses are usually seriously armoured, so that explosion must have been quite large”

A suicide bomber has attacked a bus carrying foreign troops in the Afghan capital Kabul killing 13 US soldiers.

A Nato spokesman said the attacker detonated a car filled with explosives.

The attack, in the Darulaman area, west of Kabul, also killed three Afghan civilians and a police officer.

The Taliban has admitted carrying out the attack – one of the worst ground attacks against foreign troops since the beginning of the war. Such attacks are rare in heavily-guarded Kabul.

Separately, three Australian soldiers were killed by a man in Afghan army uniform. Nato said the gunman was also killed in that attack in the south of the country.

Fewer attacks have hit Kabul this year, compared to 2010.

But the Taliban and the Pakistan-based Haqqani network, which is linked to it, have still been able to penetrate the city’s defences.

In September, the Haqqani network launched an attack on the American embassy and Isaf headquarters which lasted 20 hours.

Vehicles burning

The attack happened near Darulaman Palace, the bombed-out seat of Afghanistan’s former kings on the south-west outskirts of the capital.

Analysis

The Taliban have been pushed back in the south of the country – their traditional heartland – where Isaf has made a lot of progress. But there are hot spots there and in the east of the country.

There has been a shift in the Taliban tactics – they are adaptable, in the way they match their attacks to a changed international mission.

Attacks on members of Isaf are down, but assassinations have dramatically risen by 60%, as have roadside bombs.

There has been some success in stopping attacks, but as Nato commanders say, “Militants have to be lucky only once, we have to be lucky every day.”

The suicide attacker driving a red Toyota Corolla detonated the bomb just as the bus was passing at 11:20 (06:50 GMT). The armoured bus was blown over by the force of the explosion.

Nato helicopters were seen taking away casualties.

“It was a very strong bomb,” said one eyewitness, Gulam Saki.

Thick black smoke rose from the scene – and some distance away there were shattered windows and scattered pieces of twisted metal, suggesting the blast had been massive.

“A suicide car bomb attack was carried out on a bus of foreign forces in the Darulaman area of Kabul,” Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a text message to AFP news agency.

“Initial reports indicate that 13 International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in Kabul earlier today,” the force said in a statement. US officials later confirmed the soldiers were American.

Nato’s worst Afghan moments

  • 6 April 2005 – Chinook crash in Ghazni province kills 15 US soldiers and three civilian contractors
  • 28 June 2005 - 16 US troops killed when Taliban bring down Chinook in Kunar province
  • 16 August 2005 - 17 Spanish soldiers die when Cougar helicopter crashes near Herat
  • 5 May 2006 - 10 US soldiers die after Chinook crashes east of Kabul
  • 2 Sept 2006 – 14 UK personnel killed when RAF Nimrod explodes following mid-air refuelling
  • 18 August 2008 - 10 French soldiers killed in Taliban ambush east of Kabul
  • 6 August 2011 – 30 US special forces killed in Chinook crash

Source: BBC and news agencies

It was the deadliest incident since the Taliban shot down a US helicopter in August, killing 30 US special forces.

There has been an increase in militant attacks across Afghanistan in recent months, despite the presence of more than 130,000 foreign troops.

But this was a very significant attack, says the BBC’s Quentin Sommerville in Kabul. It is rare for so many servicemen to die in a single incident, our correspondent says.

On Thursday the Taliban said it was behind an attack on a compound housing Western officials and military personnel in the city of Kandahar. The attack was repelled after a 15-hour battle.

The US is planning to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and hand over security to local forces by 2014.

Libya: Muammar Gaddafi’s body ‘undergoes post-mortem’

People are queuing to see Gaddafi’s body which is being kept in a cold storage container in Misrata

A post-mortem examination on the body of Libya’s ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi has been performed in Misrata, an official told the BBC.

He said the body would be handed over to relatives. The burial has been delayed, with officials divided about what to do with the remains.

The UN has called for an inquiry about into Col Gaddafi’s killing on Thursday.

Meanwhile the commander of the forces that captured him in Sirte gave details of the events leading to his death.

In an exclusive BBC interview, Omran el Oweib said the injured colonel had been dragged from the drainage pipe where he had been hiding, took 10 steps and collapsed.

He said gunfire then broke out between Gaddafi supporters and fighters of the National Transitional Council (NTC). It was impossible to tell who fired the fatal bullet, he added.

At the scene

We’ve just been shown into a refrigerator compartment in a market on the outskirts of Misrata. Inside is the body of Muammar Gaddafi. He’s got various wounds on his body and what appear to be wounds on his head, although it’s not clear whether there is in fact a head shot that was talked about as the cause of death.

The crucial thing is that this is recognisably the former Libyan leader, his curly hair and trademark goatee beard. There are people queuing up outside still to view the body, the occasional chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’ ['God is great'], going up from the crowd, who are all donning face masks to overcome the smell.

It’s now coming up to two days since the Libyan leader was captured and killed, and still he hasn’t been buried, contrary to Islamic custom.

Mr Oweib said he had driven the former leader to a field hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “I tried to save his life but I couldn’t,” the commander said.

Questions have been mounting as to what happened in Col Gaddafi’s last moments. Acting Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said he had been shot in crossfire.

Video footage suggests he was dragged through the streets.

Secret burial?

The US has called on officials to give an account in an “open and transparent manner”. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the “way his death happened poses an entire number of questions”.

Mr Lavrov called for a full investigation, echoing a similar call by UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay.

However, correspondents say few Libyans are worried about the manner of their former dictator’s humiliating end. Celebrations continued late into the night across Libya.

NTC foreign affairs spokesman Ahmed Gebreel told the BBC that the post-mortem had been carried out on Saturday.

However another official, Fathi al-Bashaagha, told AFP news agency that there would be no autopsy.

Hundreds of Libyans have been queuing to get a glimpse of the bodies of Col Gaddafi and his son Mutassim – who was also killed on Thursday. They had been placed in a meat storage facility.

It is unclear whether the ex-leader will be buried in Misrata, in his hometown of Sirte, or elsewhere.

Officials from the NTC have said they want a secret burial to prevent any grave being turned into a shrine.

Pakistan's Rehman Malik: Taliban must disarm for talks

File photo of Taliban fighters in Swat, November 2007 Peace talks with the Taliban in Swat valley were not successful

Pakistan will hold peace talks with the Taliban only if the militants lay down their weapons first, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said.

He told reporters the Taliban would not "keep Kalashnikovs... and hold talks".

Both sides have indicated they are open to negotiations, but analysts doubt the insurgents, who are at war with the Pakistani state, would agree to disarm.

No such condition was set for previous talks, which failed to end violence in which thousands have died.

Mr Malik said that the minimum agenda for talks was for the insurgents to give up arms.

"If they think they will keep Kalashnikovs in their hands and also hold talks, that will not happen," he said.

Correspondents say his comments may not reflect official Pakistani policy.

In the past, peace talks with militants in tribal areas near the Afghan border have resulted in short-lived accords and accusations that Pakistan was providing the militants with sanctuary.

The Pakistani army has conducted a series of offensives against strongholds of the Pakistani Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban, along the mountainous and remote border with Afghanistan.

But it has failed to curtail the activities of the group, which is close to al-Qaeda.

Militants in Pakistan have carried out a series of devastating suicide bombings and other attacks across the country since 2007 in an attempt to overthrow the US-backed government.

Earlier this month, a senior Pakistani Taliban leader told the BBC that talks with Islamabad would not succeed until US forces leave Afghanistan in 2014.

Washington is pressing Islamabad to take further military action against the militants.

Bhutto 'kidnap plot'

On Tuesday Mr Malik released details of what he said was an plan by militants to kidnap Bilawal Bhutto, the son of President Zardari and murdered Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

He also confirmed that militants were holding Shahbaz Taseer, son of murdered Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.

Mr Taseer's car was was intercepted by four men in Lahore in August, seven months after his father was killed for opposing the country's blasphemy law.

Banks to observe Saturday-Sunday off KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and commercial banks would be observing Saturday and Sunday as weekly holidays from October 15, while few branches located in the commercial centres would remain open on Saturday as well, Geo news reported.

SBP handout issued here said that the Central Bank and all commercial banks would remain open five days a week, following the federal government’s announcement of two weekly holidays in government and semi-government organizations under a vigorous energy saving campaign.

The handout further said that banking hours for Monday-Thursday would be 9.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M., while on Friday the transactions in banks would continue up to 6.00 P.M.

According to the Central Bank, some bank branches in commercial areas would remain open on Saturday with prior permission of the Central Bank.

People in reaction said that drawing cash from the ATMs of the banks had already been a great hassle for them and now two-day a week holiday would further add to their miseries.

Industrialists said that the two days a week holiday for the banks would be adversely affecting the exports as well as the imports of the country.

Reading from the prize citation, he said the committee hoped the prize would “help to bring an end to the suppression of women that still occurs in many countries, and to realise the great potential for democracy and peace that women can represent”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel – deemed by Forbes the world’s most powerful woman – called the award a “wise decision”.

Nobel committee chair Thorbjorn Jagland announced the awards

But Mrs Sirleaf’s main rival in polls this coming Tuesday, Winston Tubman, told the BBC she did not deserve the prize and was a “warmonger”

PML(N) led sit-in at Presidency

Updated at: 1232 PST, Thursday, October 06, 2011
PML(N) led sit-in at PresidencyISLAMABAD: PML-N along with other opposition parties is staging a sit-in outside the Presidency after a protest march against prolonged loadshedding and the Balochistan situation. All the routes leading to the Presidency were blocked before the march.

Members of JUI-F, JI, Fata, PPP Sherpao and PML-Hum Khayal have joined hands with the PML-N to participate in the protest.

According to sources, government and opposition members exchanged bitter remarks against each other during National Assembly session today. The members of PML-N later walked out of the House followed by JUI-F.

Opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar, while marching towards the Presidency, said that almost all the opposition parties have joined them in the protest following their conscience.

The PML-N kicked off its movement against the government by staging a sit-in outside the Parliament House on Wednesday with a PPP parliamentarian from Balochistan, Nasir Ali Shah, to protest against the killing of members of the Hazara Shia community.

Speaking to the media outside parliament Wednesday, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the PML-N would protest against loadshedding so the government could start taking note of the internal problems plaguing the country. He said the situation had worsened to a point where the PML-N thought it would be a sin not to act. He said despite widespread protests countrywide, the PPP-led government was reluctant to take steps to overcome the crisis. Nisar vowed that his party would not let the government punish people and would remind it of its promises made to the public.

Comment: SOUNDS LIKE THAT A GIANT STEP TAKEN TO RESCUE THE NATION/COUNTRY BY GETTING CORRUPTIONS ELIMINATED OUT OF GOVERNMENT MACHINERY (that ruins the lives and economy of the nation/people/country).
