If in case gold were the main food of humans as a need similar to wheat or rice, more than 70% population of the world would have died of starvation since the time it (gold) was declared and accepted universally as the international currency of exchange.
Unfortunately, if gold were really a needful main food of humans, no other creatures of nature would be so ill-fated 'under the bright milky way of high sky' as like as them (humans). May humans be blessed!
