Tortoise beats rabbit in China pet ski-off

REALITY LIFE AWARENESS WELFARE (RLAW)
Tortoise beats rabbit in China pet ski-off

// BEIJING: A tortoise beats a rabbit in a skiing competition held for pets and their owners in northern China, a report said on Tuesday.

Cats and dogs faced off against a menagerie including a rooster and a yellow duck in a race to the finish line on snowy slopes in China´s Hebei province, the state-run China News Service said.

The 40 human competitors were allowed to place their animals on skis or sledges, or could guide the pet with a lead while skiing, the report said.

In an unexpected outcome akin to an ancient Greek fable, a tortoise beat a rabbit, with the shelled reptile eventually claiming third place overall, the report said.

"Because the rabbit loved jumping and didn´t follow its owner´s commands, it was overtaken by the tortoise," it said.

The tortoise -- which would normally be expected to hibernate during the winter -- apparently hitched a ride on its owner´s ski equipment, the report added.

Pictures showed a yellow duck taking to the slopes in a fetching red neck tie, attracting curious stares from two dogs, before being held aloft by its owner who clutched a red certificate of honour after it waddled over the finish line...........//

Karachi: 8-yr-old Thalassaemia patient with rare blood type looking for donors

HEALTH AWARENESS WELFARE :

Karachi: 8-yr-old Thalassaemia patient with rare blood type looking for donors :

// KARACHI: Afifa, 8, suffers from an inherited form of anemia caused by faulty synthesis of hemoglobin, which calls for frequent transfusion of fresh blood so that the patient could survive.

Thalassaemia is not at all a rare medical condition, but unfortunately, the type of Afifa’s blood certainly is.

This mum-dad’s little princess, who only wants to live a healthy life, was diagnosed with this genetic blood disorder five years back when she was just three. The news had blown the loving parents away, but the worst was yet to come.

“It came as a blow that benumbed us for a while, but then we made up our mind to do whatever we can to keep out child alive and healthy. We knew it’s a lifelong struggle, but we were resolved”, said her father, Wajahat Ayaz.

A tearful Ayaz said when Afifa’s blood type report arrived it got the better of us.

FACT CHECK: H/h, also known as Oh or the Bombay Blood Group, is a rare blood type. This blood phenotype was first discovered in Bombay, now known as Mumbai, in India, by Dr. Y. M. Bhende in 1952.

“We were told that hers is a blood group so rare that its donors could be counted on the fingers of one hand. At first we just broke down, but the next moment collected all the shards of our shattered world to make sure we grew old watching our child grow up, come what may”, Ayaz said further................//

HEALTH AWARENESS WELFARE (HAW):  Chinese hepatitis B vaccines are safe: WHO
Chinese hepatitis B vaccines are safe: WHO// ISLAMABAD: China's vaccines are produced and regulated in accordance with
international standards, and the hepatitis B vaccination program is
vital in safeguarding children against the illness, according to the
World Health Organization.

Bernhard Schwartlander, China
representative for the international health body, made these points
during an interview with China Daily on Thursday.

"Given that the hepatitis B virus is still around, it's important for babies to get vaccinated," he said.

The
WHO Beijing office met with the National Health and Family Planning
Commission on Thursday to discuss the latest developments surrounding
incidents in which 11 newborns have died after being inoculated against
hepatitis B.

According to Schwartlander, it's difficult to
establish a causal link between the vaccines and the babies' deaths
since nearly all infants in China receive the vaccine as part of a very
successful vaccination program..................//
