SYDNEY: Laughter may be good medicine for elderly dementia patients — and best of all, it doesn’t have side effects. Australian humour therapist Jean-Paul Bell was originally a clown doctor working with sick children, but now he makes the elderly laugh through a programme called Play-Up. Bell was also the key humour therapist in a Sydney-based study into the impact of humour therapy on mood, agitation, behavioural disturbances and social engagement in dementia patients, a study that showed those who took part seemed happier. “The whole idea behind the Play-Up programme and what we’re doing at the Arts Health Institute is encouraging them to play more because we believe that they’ve got potential to keep playing right until you take your last breath,” Bell said. He set up the Arts Health Institute to train aged-care staff in fostering playful relationships with their patients, particularly those with dementia. The study, called the SMILE study, took place over three years, involving 36 nursing homes and 400 residents. (Reuters) Comment: So its rightly said: “Laughter is the Best Medicine.”

PM Gilani convenes APC on September 29 ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has convened the All Parties Conference Thursday to discuss with political leaders the serious challenges to the national security and to forge a united stance.

The meeting, to be held on Sept 29 at the PM house, will focus on the recent threats to the national security where the political leaders will be briefed by the concerned officials about the latest situation and ways to deal with it.

Gilani on Sunday telephoned political leaders of various political parties and invited them to attend the national conference.

Gilani had telephoned chief of Pakistan Muslim League-N Nawaz Sharif, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, head of Awami National Party (ANP) Asfandyar Wali, head of Jamaat-e-Islami Munawar Hassan, Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Q Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, President Pakistan Muslim League (LM) Saleem Saifullah Khan, Pakistan Muslim League-F Pir Pagaro, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan, PPP-S chief Aftab Sherpao, JUI-N chief Anas Noorani, Parliamentary Leader of MNAs from FATA Munir Khan Orakzai and Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed of Awami Muslim League.

The relationship between Pakistan and the US has been tense over the issue of Haqqani network. Top US civil and military leadership have accused Pakistan of maintaining ties with the Haqqani network and fuelling a proxy war in Afghanistan.

If sperm donation business becomes common in any country of the world the population would surely shoot up there making that country over populated ultimately causing severer economic crisis and too much of joblessness further to what it is there at present.

To control sperm donating and producing in-numerous offspring there should be law of entering father's name and mother's as well, of the child in schools and other allied organizations including his/her identity card, passport and visa etc.so that a record of each donor can be maintained in the concerning department alarming the male population the restriction of producing a facilitated number of children by each male.

But planting and growing organic food is very good and tastes great. I think these things are very important for eating and reaching our full potential. I also think herbs for healing and drinking teas are just awesome. What do you think and why?

Yes,I've observational experience about usefulness of planted fresh foods having far more potentiality in them than it may be in frozen foods.

However, what you have said about herbs for healing and drinking teas terming them as awesome, I dare say I disagree to great extent to it because they have their reputation of having pretty good usefulness as per scientific health information reaching us through various sources.

A very few number men may be found getting afraid of rats or reptiles as like as women, whereas, some women claim that they aren't afraid of even snakes or tigers. men getting afraid of rats etc. and women not of even snakes are just odd and peculiar cases for the both.

I've a wise old friend who says often in light vain (jokingly) men that scared of rats are almost 'womanish', lacking their masculinity and women not scared of even snakes etc. mostly loses their femininity, whereas, both the cases contain oddity and peculiarity.

Further he said, "notwithstanding, a real woman should continue with their femininity and men their masculinity, that's much. Otherwise, life and living with such people seem artificial, not natural in reality, hence that nature living becomes charmless to most people."

Divorce is, of course, understood as unpleasant and unlikable nature of action. However, there are situations when one has to consider the matter of continuing with the wedlock more than thinking of a break of it because, the person who divorces suffers, his/her offspring and the family as well.

In such situation as wise people do that they take time from each other and temporarily adopt living/staying separately. Later they discuss the matter to find maximum positive reasons for their living together as married couple and so on.

Notwithstanding, in case the situation gets too tough and rough to save the marriage by trying various means, divorce stands as compulsory, otherwise, a life of restlessness etc. begins and that may cause losing health and some other complications in living and letting live.

Although divorce becomes an unavoidable it becomes a must yet one must consider and reconsider on not divorcing as much it can be possible because after effect of it is bitter, seldom sweet.

The number of Americans living in poverty rose to a record 46.2 million last year, official data has shown.

This is the highest figure since the US Census Bureau started collecting the data in 1959.

In percentage terms, the poverty rate rose to 15.1%, up from 14.3% in 2009.

The US definition of poverty is an annual income of $22,314 (£14,129) or less for a family of four and $11,139 for a single person.

The number of Americans living below the poverty line has now risen for four years in a row, while the poverty rate is the biggest since 1993.

Poverty among black and Hispanic people was much higher than for the overall US population last year, the figures also showed.

The Census Bureau data said 25.8% of black people were living in poverty and 25.3% of Hispanic people.

Its latest report also showed that the average annual US household income fell 2.3% in 2010 to $49,445.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans without health insurance remained about 50 million.

The data comes as the US unemployment rate remains above 9%.

President Barack Obama last week launched a new $450bn job creation plan.

He wants to fund huge construction projects, schools and services, while giving tax cuts to workers and small businesses to boost recruitment.

However, his plans require backing from Congress, where Republicans - who control the House of Representatives - have voiced their opposition.

Comment: 15+ years before in a report published in weekly the 'Time' I found about US (America) as the 13th richest country of the world. I wonder at what serial number as the richest country US would be when as per report its in too much of economic crisis.

ISLAMABAD: American journalist Mark Siegel has become prosecution’s witness in the former prime minister and PPP leader Benazir Bhutto’s (BB) murder case, Geo News reported Saturday. Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court (ATC) is hearing Bhutto’s murder case today.

Prosecutor of FIA Chaudhry Zulfiqar, who is a member of the joint investigation team in the case, recorded Siegel’s statement in the US that will be presented in the court today.

Siegel in his statement told the investigating team that BB was distressed after receiving a phone call from former president Pervez Musharraf while he was present with her.

According to Siegel, Musharraf warned Bhutto that she would be responsible for her own security if she returned before elections.

Chaudhry Zulfiqar told that Siegel would be presented in the ATC when time will come.

Seven accused in the BB’s murder case are expected to be indicted during today’s proceedings.

KARACHI: The hearing of the suo moto Karachi violence case was adjourned on Friday till September 13, Geo News reported.

The five member bench of the Supreme Court is headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry. During Friday’s proceedings Attorney General, Maulvi Anwau-ul-Haq presented the report of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to the bench.

Advocate General Sindh, Fateh Malik presented a summary of different cases from July 24 till August 24. The Chief Justice directed the Advocate General to provide details of the firing on a bus in Banaras and the kidnapping of footballers in Lyari.

IG Sindh, Wajid Durrani also appeared before the court and said that 40% of police officers had political affiliations. The Chief Justice remarked the court had ordered that shoulder promotions be stopped but this was not implemented in Sindh.

WASHINGTON: The mission to kill Osama bin Laden was almost called off at the last minute due to a lack of certainty over whether the terrorist leader was living in a Pakistani compound, a new documentary has revealed. In his first detailed interview since the Al-Qaida leader was shot dead by Navy Seals, US president Barack Obama revealed that he took a “gamble” and was advised not to go through with the risky operation. Just days before the May 1 attack, the CIA had advised there was a 60-70 per cent certainty that bin Laden was holed up with his family in a fortified compound in a military suburb of Abbottabad, Pakistan. But on April 28 a special “red team” of security analysts advised the President they were only about 30-40 per cent certain it was the world’s most wanted man, due to a lack of evidence and an unusually large number of visitors to the house. A “tense” Whitehouse meeting followed where a number of Obama’s highest advisers told him the “stakes were too damn high”. “Even though I thought it was only 50/50 that bin Laden was there I thought it was worth us taking a shot,” Obama said in Bin Laden: Shoot to Kill If the mission was unsuccessful, the President admitted he faced “huge geopolitical ramifications”. But when it was finally confirmed that bin Laden had been killed with shots to the head and chest, there was little celebration inside the White House, the documentary revealed. “This was a big gamble. NAWABSHAH: President Asif Ali Zardari has advised PML-N chief, Nawaz Sharif to be wise as critical times are ahead, Geo News reported Thursday.

He said that people in Sindh and Punjab are hit by flood and dengue virus respectively, therefore the PML-N chief should lend his helping hand.

The President said that Nawaz Sharif should visit Sindh in the interest of people and help the flood affectees instead of addressing public meetings. It is time to take steps to eradicate the dengue virus and help in providing treatment to the victims and stop playing blame games.

Zardari further said that the PML-N chief should adopt positive attitude and stop criticizing the military, as people are already frustrated over political confrontations.

While talking about democracy, President Zardari said the majority during former president Farooq Leghari's tenure could not save democracy. It takes years to build democracy but seconds to ravage it, president added.

A bomb outside the Indian High Court in the capital Delhi has killed 10 people and injured at least 61.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a "cowardly act of a terrorist nature".

The bomb was apparently placed in a case near the first security checkpoint at the court, where people were queuing for passes, officials said.

Investigators said they were taking seriously an email claim by the extremist group Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami (Huji) that it planted the bomb.

"It would be very premature to make any comment on the mail at this stage, but yes, that mail has to be looked at seriously, because Huji is a very prominent terrorist group," SC Sinha, Director General of India's National Investigation Agency, told reporters.

The email reportedly demands that a man sentenced to death for involvement in an attack on Delhi's parliament ten years ago should not be hanged.

The US state department says Huji is a terrorist organisation with links to al-Qaeda. The group has been accused of carrying out attacks in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The leader of Huji, Ilyas Kashmiri, was reportedly killed in a US drone strike in north-western Pakistan in June.

Jose Carlos Meirelles, of Funai, said his government agency needs proof of the existence of "uncontacted" Indian communities in Brazil due to the threat posed by illegal logging and mining. They are known as "uncontacted" because they have only limited dealings with the outside world.

KARACHI: The Supreme Court Karachi Registry adjourned hearing of the Karachi suo moto case till Thursday, Geo News reported Wednesday.

During today’s proceedings, DG Rangers Ijaz Chaudhry informed the court that militant groups of political and ethnic parties were involved in the violence in the city. He added that the situation in Karachi was worse than Waziristan and a military solution was only temporary but the issue could be resolved through political means. The DG Rangers requested that police powers given to the Rangers should last until peace is restored in the city.

Earlier during proceedings, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) lawyer, Abdul Qadir Jatoi informed the court that the killing in Karachi was being done under the guidance of political parties in order to influence the senate elections. Jatoi added that Zulfiqar Mirza had made important disclosures and was an important witness in the case.

The Chief Justice remarked that if Zulfiqar Mirza said something then his affidavit should be presented in court and a petition should be filed. He further said that it was not the job of the court to record statements of witnesses and for this a separate petition had to be filed.

“Why should we call Zulfiqar Mirza, if he has something to say he should record his sworn statement” Chief Justice said. A CD of Zulfiqar Mirza was also presented by the JI lawyer.

The chief of Awami Tehreek, Rasul Bux Palejo said the present government was a dummy and only wanted to collect tax “the real power is with the US”.

He added that everyone knew that the MQM was behind the violence but no one was willing to take their name and even certain judges were scared.

The MQM also submitted a petition to become a party in the case. The lawyer for the party said that a list of people beheaded during the violence had been submitted and 230 MQM activists had been killed since 2008.

LAHORE: The number of patients suffering from Dengue is increasing rapidly here, Geo News reported. According to the health department, 1,729 Dengue cases have been reported across Punjab with 1,555 cases being reported in Lahore alone. Doctors said patients are being provided free treatment but only severe cases are being admitted. Residents of several areas of Lahore have complained that fumigation is not being conducted in their area, and if it is then the standard of spray is below par. This prompted Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif to form a committee to check the standard of the spray being used for fumigation. Affectees worried as SIDA issues flood warning

ISLAMABAD: The situation has become worse in several districts, including Badin, Mirpurkhas and Khairpur, after heavy rains and the number of affected people keeps increasing. Sindh Irrigation Drainage Authority (SIDA) issued letters to DCOs of red alert warning for Badin, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar.

According to DCO Abbas Baloch, over one million acres of farmland has been destroyed while several feet of floodwater has accumulated in Faiz Ganj, Nara, Umerkot and Kot DG that has triggered several diseases in the affected areas.

The flood victims are suffering from malaria and gastro diseases while snake-biting incidents were also reported.

The low-lying areas of Mirpurkhas are submerged in floodwater, including the railway subway bridge. Power supply has also been suspended in many areas of the city.

A number of families have migrated from the flood-hit areas while thousands are still waiting for help. The Army has been summoned to Faiz Ganj.

The water level in Indus river is rising, already inundating eight villages. The road connecting Obaro and Kashmore has been cut off to spill excess water.

Our correspondent adds from Thatta: Sindh minister Sassui Palijo has said that the government would provide relief to the people affected by the heavy rains in the district.

She was presiding over a meeting of officials concerned in Darbar Hall in DCO office here on Tuesday. The minister expressed annoyance over the poor performance of sanitation department and failure of the drainage system, which caused difficulties to the people.

Meanwhile, activists of the Thatta Bachayo Tahreek staged a protest in front of the DCO office when the meeting was in progress. The protesters chanted slogans against loadshedding and worsening civic conditions in Thatta city and other towns of the district.

The civic conditions are extremely deplorable in Thatta city following the recent rains. The main Shahi bazaar and almost all major roads are inundated with sewerage mixed rainwater.
