Birds sense speed limits on roads: study

AMAZING, INTERESTING & KNOWLEDGEABLE:

OTTAWA: Birds sense posted speed limits on roads and react to avoid collisions, according to a study out Wednesday.

Researchers said birds appear to have adapted to the local speed limits as a feature of their environment, such as the risk of predators.

Strict enforcement of speed limits could therefore significantly help with conservation, especially for endangered species in populated areas, Pierre Legagneux, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Quebec in Rimouski, told AFP.

"I realized that the birds were not reacting to the actual speed of my car, but to the average speed of cars on these roads, to the posted speed limits," the lead researcher said in a telephone interview.

The birds "associate road sections with speed limits as a way to assess collision risk," he added in the study published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

"So strictly enforcing speed limits could reduce bird collisions."

Legagneuxsaid he was tracking ducks in western France for other research when hecame across a bird on a road that forced him to stop to avoid it, and caused him to wonder how birds think about cars and avoid collisions.

Legagneux began studying bird responses during the long drive home from his laboratory in a small white Peugeot 205, a route that took him through croplands, forests and small villages between November 2006 and November2007.

With colleague Simon Ducatez, he monitored and analyzed the
responses of 21 species of birds on roads with posted speed limits of
20, 50, 90 and 110 kilometers per hour (12 to 68 miles per hour).

The process involved noting when a bird took off to avoid his approaching car and how long it took the bird to reach its final position on the ground. (AFP)

Zamurud Khan’s action triggers debate in Pakistan
 LEGAL AWARENESS WELFARE (LAW):
Right, yet it’s not an individuals job to get hold a terrorist that concerns the government and its forces etc. Furthermore, Mr. Zamurud Khan isn't believed to have such extra-ordinary training to do the job that he assigned himself to perform taking a big risk on his own risk and consequences. However, it could be informed later that the government had its strategic secret mission to arrest the culprit alive and unhurt too (if possible). But Mr. Zamurud's sudden intervention seems to have caused a severe distraction in the government forces' aims and objectives planned and actionised were distracted, stumbled and went in vain.

‘The Butler’ opens at the top of box office: estimates

ENTERTAINMENT + LEGAL AWARENESS WELFARE (LAW):

// LOS ANGELES: ‘The Butler,’ about an African American who watches civil rights history in the making as a White House butler, debuted at the topof the North American box office, estimates showed Sunday.

Directedby Lee Daniels and starring Forrest Whitaker in the title role, the historical drama pulled in over $25 million over the weekend, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

That performance eclipsed science-fiction thriller "Elysium," last week's top earner, which fell to third place behind "We're the Millers," a Jennifer Aniston comedy.

"We're the Millers" held the number two spot with a box office take of nearly $17.8 million on its second weekend in theaters.

"Elysium," which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, brought in $13.6 million.

In its first week in theaters, "Kick-Ass 2," the superhero action comedy sequel, ranked fourth with $13.5 million in weekend sales.

"Planes,"a spin-off of the hugely successful "Cars" franchise, landed in fifth place on its second weekend out, raking in $13.1 million.

"Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," an adaptation based on the book series by Rick Riordan about a schoolboy who is the son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, made an estimated $8.4 million, dropping to sixth place from fourth last week.

"Jobs," the biopic with Ashton Kutcher in the role of Apple founder Steve Jobs, opened over the weekend in 7th place, with $6.7 million in box office receipts.

The Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg action comedy "2 Guns" slid to eighth place after three weeks in theaters, making $5.6 million.

Young Australians getting fatter: study

HEALTH AWARENESS WELFARE (LAW):
// SYDNEY: Young Australians have a reputation for being fit and enjoying a sporty, outdoorsy lifestyle, but research released Monday found they are stacking on more weight than any other age group.
The alarming findings of the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study have raised concerns that by putting on so much weight in their 20s and 30s, Australians are at more risk of developing diabetes in middle age.
"The trend for greater weight gain amongst people aged 25-34 is very concerning and suggests Australia still does not recognise the serious health risks associated with being overweight or obese," said study co-chief investigator Jonathan Shaw.
"The health and well-being of a whole generation of young Australians is being compromised by a lifestyle rich in energy-dense foods and low on physical activity."
The study, which has tracked 11,000 respondents across the nation over 12 years, found that for all ages the average weight gain was 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds).
But those aged 25-34 when they first interviewed for the study in 1999 or 2000, had stacked on the most since then, with an average 6.7 kilogram gain.
"We've seen that over 12 years people are, on average, continuing to put on weight," said Shaw, who called for tough decisions from governments to improve health outcomes.
"On average 5.3 centimetres (2.1 inches) extra waist circumference across the whole population but particularly so in younger adults."
Waistlines for the original 25-34 group stretched 6.6 centimetres over the period.

The study revealed major discrepancies between participant's perceptions about how long they spent sitting and the actual amount of time in which they were sedentary.
Participants self-reported that they spent an average of 200 minutes a day sitting but measurement devices worn by them recorded an average 500 minutes a day spent sitting down.
The study is the largest Australian longitudinal population-based study of its kind and has tracked the 11,000 respondents for more than a decade to determine how many of the participants develop diabetes, obesity, kidney and heart disease.
The latest data, taken in 2011-12, found that living in the most socially disadvantaged areas doubled the risk of developing diabetes while the prevalence of depression was much higher in obese people. (AFP) //
