‘The Butler’ opens at the top of box office: estimates | ENTERTAINMENT - geo.tv
ENTERTAINMENT + LEGAL AWARENESS WELFARE (LAW):
// LOS ANGELES: ‘The Butler,’ about an African American who watches civil rights history in the making as a White House butler, debuted at the topof the North American box office, estimates showed Sunday.
Directedby Lee Daniels and starring Forrest Whitaker in the title role, the historical drama pulled in over $25 million over the weekend, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
That performance eclipsed science-fiction thriller "Elysium," last week's top earner, which fell to third place behind "We're the Millers," a Jennifer Aniston comedy.
"We're the Millers" held the number two spot with a box office take of nearly $17.8 million on its second weekend in theaters.
"Elysium," which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, brought in $13.6 million.
In its first week in theaters, "Kick-Ass 2," the superhero action comedy sequel, ranked fourth with $13.5 million in weekend sales.
"Planes,"a spin-off of the hugely successful "Cars" franchise, landed in fifth place on its second weekend out, raking in $13.1 million.
"Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," an adaptation based on the book series by Rick Riordan about a schoolboy who is the son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, made an estimated $8.4 million, dropping to sixth place from fourth last week.
"Jobs," the biopic with Ashton Kutcher in the role of Apple founder Steve Jobs, opened over the weekend in 7th place, with $6.7 million in box office receipts.
The Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg action comedy "2 Guns" slid to eighth place after three weeks in theaters, making $5.6 million.
Ninth went to "The Smurfs 2" with $4.6 million in ticket sales, while "The Wolverine,"with Hugh Jackman, clung to tenth, making $4.4 million. (AFP) //

Young Australians getting fatter: study | HEALTH - geo.tv
HEALTH AWARENESS WELFARE (LAW):
// SYDNEY: Young Australians have a reputation for being fit and enjoying a sporty, outdoorsy lifestyle, but research released Monday found they are stacking on more weight than any other age group.
The alarming findings of the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study have raised concerns that by putting on so much weight in their 20s and 30s, Australians are at more risk of developing diabetes in middle age.
"The trend for greater weight gain amongst people aged 25-34 is very concerning and suggests Australia still does not recognise the serious health risks associated with being overweight or obese," said study co-chief investigator Jonathan Shaw.
"The health and well-being of a whole generation of young Australians is being compromised by a lifestyle rich in energy-dense foods and low on physical activity."
The study, which has tracked 11,000 respondents across the nation over 12 years, found that for all ages the average weight gain was 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds).
But those aged 25-34 when they first interviewed for the study in 1999 or 2000, had stacked on the most since then, with an average 6.7 kilogram gain.
"We've seen that over 12 years people are, on average, continuing to put on weight," said Shaw, who called for tough decisions from governments to improve health outcomes.
"On average 5.3 centimetres (2.1 inches) extra waist circumference across the whole population but particularly so in younger adults."
Waistlines for the original 25-34 group stretched 6.6 centimetres over the period.
The study revealed major discrepancies between participant's perceptions about how long they spent sitting and the actual amount of time in which they were sedentary.
Participants self-reported that they spent an average of 200 minutes a day sitting but measurement devices worn by them recorded an average 500 minutes a day spent sitting down.
The study is the largest Australian longitudinal population-based study of its kind and has tracked the 11,000 respondents for more than a decade to determine how many of the participants develop diabetes, obesity, kidney and heart disease.
The latest data, taken in 2011-12, found that living in the most socially disadvantaged areas doubled the risk of developing diabetes while the prevalence of depression was much higher in obese people. (AFP) //

AMAZING, INTERESTING & KNOWLEDGEABLE!
// MONTREAL: Little more than a week after a giant python crushed two young Canadian boys to death, police have recovered 40 of the snakes from a hotel room.
The reptiles were found in several plastic storage bins on
Thursday night in a room in Brantford, Ontario, where a couple who had been evicted from their home were staying, police said in a

Officers have opened a probe into the incident but they
did not say where the couple were at the time or whether the pair would be charged with breaking local laws that prohibit owning pythons.
The snakes, which ranged in length from 30 centimeters to 1.4 meters, were In poor health and have been taken in by the Canadian Society for the Protection of Animals, where a veterinarian is monitoring them...........//

Singing Changes Your Brain | TIME.com
CREATIVE LIVING AWARENESS WELFARE (CLAW):
It’s really delightful research report news that singing has been scientifically proven to lower stress, relieve anxiety, and elevate endorphins. For future I'll surely make it a point for myself to sing often whenever I find suitable time and situation knowing that singing releases tense and induces relaxation as that I felt in the past as well.
