WASHINGTON: A salmonella outbreak in raw chicken has sickened nearly 300 people in the United States, officials said Wednesday as consumer advocates warned the federal shutdown was hampering a government response.

The 278 illnesses in 18 states were believed to be linked to raw chicken from three Foster Farms locations in California, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

"The outbreak is still ongoing, and therefore our investigation is still ongoing," an FSIS spokesman told AFP, noting that 135 inspectors were on duty responding to the outbreak despite the government shutdown.

"The only folks that were furloughed were back at our headquarters."

The shutdown, which began October 1, has sent hundreds of thousands of federal workers home without pay, including staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration.

It is the first shutdown in 17 years and was driven by a resurgence of Republican opposition to President Barack Obama's health care reform law passed in 2010.

A CDC spokeswoman said that six employees had been recalled to staff a network of public

First-ever comet material discovered on Earth

AMAZING & INTERESTING:

// JOHANNESBURG: A comet exploded over modern-day Egypt 28 million years ago, raining down fire and leaving behind a "mysterious" black pebble -- the first-ever comet material found on Earth, scientists said Tuesday as they announced the discovery.

"Comets always visit our skies -- they're these dirty snowballs of ice mixed with dust -- but never before in history has material from a comet ever been found on Earth," said professor David Block at South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand.

Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun had a scarab broach made from yellow silica glass created when the comet's explosion heated sand to 2,000 degrees Celsius (3,600 degrees Fahrenheit).

But also left behind was the first comet material discovered on Earth -- a black pebble embedded in the modern-day Sahara's sands, the university said in a statement.

The pebble was "the first ever evidence of a comet entering Earth's atmosphere and exploding, raining down a shock wave of fire which obliterated every life form in its path," it said.

South African scholars headed a team of geoscientists, physicists and astronomers who tested the pebble, which was found in 1996.

It had "been sitting around for a long time" until it ended up with a team member studying diamonds, according to Johannesburg University professor Jan Kramers.

The shock of impact created microscopic diamonds on the pebble, but studies showed this was no ordinary bit of stone.

The 30-gramme (one-ounce) pebble had a clear "extraterrestrial component" yet was distinctly different from meteorites, said Kramers.

"If you compare it with meteorites... they contain only about three percent carbon. And this thing contains 65 percent carbon," he told AFP.

Chemical tests led the experts to "the inescapable conclusion that it represented the very first known hand specimen of a comet nucleus," according to the University of the Witwatersrand...........//

SYDNEY:
A commercial diver suffered "substantial" injuries after being attacked
by a shark off remote Western Australia, officials said Tuesday.

The man, reportedly aged 55, was with a diving crew from Southern Wild
Abalone when the shark struck off Poison Creek beach, east of the town
of Esperance.

"Obviously, there has been some substantial injuries
(as) with any encounter with a shark, but at this stage (the details
are) still quite sketchy," the firm's owner Marcus Tromp told the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"I understood that he was still conscious and in good hands as far as first aid goes," he added.

Another diver was in the area and came to assist the injured man's crew with
first aid before he was transported to shore for treatment, Tromp said. - See more at: http://

******************************************************************************

/ SOUTHAMPTON: Diesel exhaust fumes alter the flowery smells that guide bees when they forage, potentially sending them off course and putting the food-growing industry at risk, a study said today.

Honeybees rely heavily on their sense of smell to locate flowers from which they harvest life-giving nectar -- transferring pollen grains from one bloom to another in the process.

The new research shows that diesel exhaust fumes from cars, tractors or power generators can chemically alter the smell of flowers and render them undetectable to bees.

This, in turn, threatens the insects' crucial role as a key pollinators of human food crops.

"Somewhere in the region of 70 per cent of world crops require pollination services, and... About 35 per cent of our current food production is reliant on pollination," study co-author Tracey Newman of the University of Southampton told a press conference ahead of the report's release in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

Pollination services have an estimated economic value of 153 billion euros (USD 208 billion) a year.

For the study, Newman and a team created a synthetic odour blend mimicking the complex chemical mix that make up the smell of oilseed rape flowers.

The synthetic blend of eight chemicals was released into a sealed glass vessel with clean air, and another that contained diesel exhaust at levels similar to rush-hour, roadside fumes.

The fumes contained high concentrations of NOx gases: nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, as well as carbon monoxide.

Within one minute, the chemicals alpha-farnesene and alpha-terpinene, which comprised 72.5 per cent and 0.8 per cent of the blend respectively, were "rendered undetectable" in the diesel-polluted air.

The other chemicals were also considerably reduced in volume while there was no change for the blend in the clean-air vial.

Next, the team tested whether bees would notice the difference.

They trained the insects by exposing them to the eight-chemical synthetic odour blend and feeding them a sugar solution at the same time to build an association of reward -- as the smell of flowers hold the promise of nectar.

Over time, the trained bees would start sticking out their tongue-like proboscis in anticipation whenever they recognised the odour. (AFP) //

// WASHINGTON: US doctors prescribe antibiotics to six out of 10 patients with a sore throat, even though only one infection in 10 is severe enough to merit them, researchers said Thursday.

Over prescribing of antibiotics is dangerous because it contributes to the rise of superbugs that do not respond to treatment.

US health officials have repeatedly warned that nearly all major bacterial infections in the world are becoming resistant to the antibiotic treatment of choice.

The latest study by Michael Barnett and Jeffrey Linder at Harvard University and Brigham and Women's Hospital included data on more than 8,100 visits to doctors' offices and emergency departments from 1997-2010.

Antibiotic prescribing rates were initially around 80 percent and have bottomed out at 60 percent for the past decade, said the research letter in the Journal of the American Medical Association...............................//

Health: World Rabies Day being observed

- A.R.Shams's Reflection - Series of Press / Online Publication - Moral Messages Worldwide - http://arshamssrefletion.blogs/...
__________________________________________

// KARACHI: World Rabies Day is being observed today with aim to raise awareness about the impact of rabies on humans & animals, provide information and advice on how to prevent the disease.

Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals. The disease can be transmitted from one species to another, such as from dogs to humans. For a human, rabies is almost invariably fatal if postexposure prophylaxis is not administered prior to the onset of severe symptoms. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death.

On the occasion of World Rabies Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have united in their goal to eliminate human rabies and control the disease in animals.

Every year, an estimated 60000 people die an agonizing death from rabies, many of whom are children bitten by rabies-infected dogs.

Community participation, education and public awareness are important elements of successful rabies control programmes, and mass vaccination of dogs is critical. Communities need to take responsibility for their dogs, preve nt dog bites and know what to do when bitten.

More than 100 countries report cases of rabies in dogs putting people at risk. Vaccinating at least 70% of dogs breaks the cycle of transmission in dogs and to humans. Rabies programmes need to incorporate free-roaming and street dogs with options for dog population management.

Safe, efficacious and affordable dog rabies vaccines are available, and countries embarking on rabies elimination need easy access to quality-assured dog vaccines for vaccination campaigns and for outbreak management. Vaccine banks can help facilitate procurement and deliveries.

A person who is bitten by a rabid animal still has the chance to survive if the wound is cleaned immediately and thoroughly with plenty of water and soap and post-exposure prophylaxis is provided in time (a course of vaccines and, in severe cases, immunoglobulins). Preventive rabies vaccination can be given to people at high risk of exposure from domestic or wild animals, such as animal health workers, veterinarians or laboratory personnel, to protect them before they are exposed.

Surveillance is an important pillar to understand trends and to guide action in rabies elimination. Disease reporting is essential for identifying risk areas and providing assurance of absence of disease. Laboratory capacity is critical to confirm cases and requires strengthening in many parts of the world.

Besides addressing rabies in dogs, rabies transmitt ed by wildlife also requires attention. In a few regions of the world, rabies transmitted by wildlife has become the most prominent pathway for human rabies transmission, for example bat- transmitted rabies in South America. Changes in the environment and closer human contact with wildlife can lead to increased human exposure to rabies-infected wildlife species. Livestock can become infected with rabies by dogs or wildlife, resulting in economic losses and impacting food security.//

Therefore, some positive steps should be taken by all the global country governments.

about making huge profits that they hired an unfit doctor for the star,
his family's lawyer said Tuesday in closing arguments.

As a five-month trial draws to a close, Jackson attorney Brian Panish said
the self-styled King of Pop was "an easy target" for AEG Live, which was

"We may never see the likes of Michael Jackson again," Panish told the
