Big underground river flows below Amazon

RIO DE JANEIRO: Scientists in Brazil claim to have discovered a massive 6000km river running deep below the Amazon basin, but other researchers think it might just be water trickling through underground rocks.
Known for its rich biodiversity and misty beauty, researchers are now wondering if they have only seen part of the Amazon, since the "discovery" of the underground Hamza River was presented by scientists from Brazil’s National Observatory at a conference last week. Elizabeth Tavares Pimentel and Valiya Hamza located the river by collecting data samples from temperature variations in 241 abandoned deep wells, drilled in the Amazon by Petrobras, Brazil's state oil company, in the 1970s and 1980s. If the river, located between two and four kilometres below the earth's surface, is as big as the scientists believe, it could be the longest underground river in the world. "It is kind of fascinating from a scientific point of view," said Michael Coe, leader of the Amazon programme at the Woods Hole research centre in the US who has studied the area for 12 years. "What we see on the surface is not all that is going on." Untraditional river While massive in size, the underground formation probably holds less than three per cent of the water, which flows through the traditional Amazon, Coe said. "It is not a river in the sense of water flowing through a tube; it would be water flowing through porous stones," he told Al Jazeera. "The lion's share of the water is still on the surface." Jorge Figueiredo, a geologist with Petrobras who has published widely on the Amazon, scoffs when asked if the underground water should be considered a river. “The authors made their conclusion based on the temperature of the rocks, but we have data against this possibility.” He doesn’t think the discovery was based on sound science. The report came from a presentation at a conference. It did not pass peer review from other scientists in a scholarly journal. “It seems to be a bit of nonsense work,” Figueiredo said. The variation of temperature, an important part of the researcher’s theory, “can be based on many different things,” he said. While the Hamza River may be massive, the water running through it moves slowly. About 133,000 cubic metres of water flows through the traditional Amazon each second, while the underground river's flow rate has been estimated at about 3900 cubic metres per second. While the Amazon ranges from one kilometer to 100 kilometers in width, the Hamza is much wider, allegedly ranging from 200 to 400km. But the river’s size means it is unlikely to be a continuous flow, Figueiredo said. Broader implications unclear “Six thousands kilometres [the apparent length of the river] is almost the width of South America,” Figueiredo told Al Jazeera. Underground rock formations across the contient are not all connected, he said, meaning the chances of one continuous river are unlikely at best. He does not believe the underground water should be considered a river. Scientists are not sure what the discovery means for broader ecological issues. “This could contribute to slow salinity in near-coastal environments, but I am not sure,” Coe said. If the water is fresh, as some scientists claim, it could affect coastal ecosystems from mangroves to marshlands. Figueiredo does not think there is any way fresh water could be buried that deep. Bacteria and other small organisms are likely the only life, which could survive in water this far underground, Coe said. If nothing else the discovery underscores how many important natural resources exist, undiscovered, in the Amazon, said Rafael Cruz, a Greenpeace campaigner in Brazil. “For us, it is a confirmation of how precious the Amazon forest is and how we have to preserve it,” he told Al Jazeera. “The scientific community is going to speak out with this new discovery and it will be important in the whole conservation debate.”

MTV video awards honor Britney Spears, Katy Perry

LOS ANGELES: Pop star Lady Gaga opened the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday dressed in drag and singing her "You and I" while Britney Spears and Katy Perry took awards, but it may be Beyonce who stole the show.
The R&B singer whose hits include "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" appeared visibly pregnant as she showed up on the red carpet outside the show, posing for photographers and outlining a baby bump with her hands under her long gown. Beyonce, who is married to rapper Jay-Z, avoided reporters waiting to ask whether she is pregnant. For years, her fans and the media have speculated whether and when the pair might have a baby. Lady Gaga, who showed up last year at the MTV video awards in a dress made of raw meat, did an about face this year, opening the program in a man's dark suit and T-shirt as her male alter ego, Joe Calderon who gave the audience a lecture in just who Gaga is -- high heels, wild hair and crazy costumes. "When she gets on stage, she holds nothing back," Calderon said. Lady Gaga then launched into a version of "You and I," backed by a group of dancers and legendary rock guitarist Brian May of Queen. She danced on her piano and spewed beer from a bottle into the air in celebration. The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) annually give out honors for the top music videos and performances to singers and bands, and each year, audiences can count on at least one surprise. Beyonce's picture-perfect baby news will likely be this year's unexpected event. But awards are the focus of the night and the first winner was Spears for best pop music video "Till the World Ends." The pop star took the stage and seemed surprised, saying she hadn't expected to win and thanking her family and fans. Along with Spears, Foo Fighters picked up an early honor for best rock video with "Walk," and Nicki Minaj picked up the "Moonman" winner's statuette for her "Super Bass." Katy Perry and Kanye West were named best collaboration with "E.T." Another major award still to come is best new artist, and Tyler, The Creator figures prominently in that race, too, alongside Wiz Khalifa with "Black and Yellow," Kreayshawn for "Gucci Gucci," Foster the People with "Pumped Up Kicks," and Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown) for "My Last." British singer Adele with her chart-topping song "Rolling in the Deep" is vying for the top award, video of the year, against Katy Perry ("Firework"), Bruno Mars ("Grenade"), the Beastie Boys ("Make Some Noise") and Tyler, The Creator ("Yonkers"). Early performances included a duet by Jay-Z and Kanye West, singing a song from their new album, "Watch the Throne." Other singers still to come include Lil Wayne, and there will be special tributes to Britney Spears and late soul singer Amy Winehouse. (Reuters) |

At least 21 killed as a result of Hurricane Irene
Updated at: 1015 PST, Monday, August 29, 2011
| ||
NEW YORK: Emergency officials said at least 21 people across the United States have died as a result of Hurricane Irene: six in North Carolina; four each in Virginia and Pennsylvania; two in New York; and one each in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey and Florida.
Authorities are trying to determine whether an additional death reported in New York is connected to the storm. The youngest fatalities were a boy killed by a falling tree in his apartment in Newport News, a city on a coastal peninsula in Virginia, and a girl who died in North Carolina. North Carolina emergency management spokesman Brad Deen said one of the six victims in his state was a man who had a heart attack on Friday while nailing plywood over his windows in preparation for the hurricane. Two people were also killed in the state in separate driving accidents. Another North Carolina fatality was a man struck by a falling tree limb while outside feeding his animals. Ruth Miller, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, told that four fatalities had so far been confirmed in her state. In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie initially said two people had been killed -- a woman trapped in her car by rising floodwaters and a firefighter who succumbed to his injuries during a rescue attempt. But only the woman's death was confirmed -- the firefighter was still alive in a critical condition in hospital and Christie had spoken out of turn after being given inaccurate information by his staff. One man was killed by a storm-related electrical fire in Connecticut, while another storm-related death was a 55-year-old surfer who took to his board in treacherously high waves off the Florida coast on Friday. Irene barreled up the east coast Sunday into the densely populated northeastern states of Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In Vermont, Governor Peter Shumlin told CNN that a woman was feared dead after being swept into a rushing river, but a spokesman for the state's Emergency Management Agency, Mark Bosma, said her death was not confirmed. Millions of people are without power and officials warned that flood damage from Irene's heavy rains may be felt for days. Irene earlier left at least five people dead in the Caribbean, including one in the US territory of Puerto Rico. (AFP)

Karachi violence: SC adjourns hearing till Tuesday |
Updated at: 1215 PST, Monday, August 29, 2011
KARACHI: The Supreme Court’s Karachi registry began hearing the suo moto case regarding the security situation in Karachi, Geo News reported. The case is being heard by a five-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. During proceedings, IG Sindh Wajid Durrani informed the court that 306 people had been killed during July 24 and August 24. 25 bodies were recovered, 17 of which were recovered in gunny sacks. 332 cases were also lodged. The Chief Justice asked the IG if he had investigated where the abducted people were taken and that he should have recorded the statement of at least one of the abducted. The IG informed the court that 20 criminals had been arrested but those abducted had failed to identity anyone due to fear. In his defense the IG told the court that those abducted on August 19 had been recovered. In his remarks, the Chief Justice said the protection of life and property lay with institutions. He asked why SHO’s were not aware of crime in their jurisdiction. To this, IGP Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani replied that police and ordinary citizens were not allowed entry in no-go areas of Karachi. He also informed the court that extortion was a problem which was plaguing the city for the last 10-12 years. Durrani informed the court about weapons which were present in the city, such as rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns to which the Chief Justice asked where were these weapons coming from? The Chief Justice asked the IG where torture cells had been discovered, to which Durrani replied that the police had not found any. The chief justice formed two benches for hearing cases at the Karachi Registry on August 29 and 30. The first bench is headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while the second bench will be headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali. The families of the victims of target killings were also asked to volunteer their appearance before the apex court and may also submit any evidence, if available. The court has adjourned the hearing till Tuesday. |
Zulfiqar Mirza resigns: Lashes out at Malik, MQM
Zulfiqar Mirza resigns: Lashes out at Malik, MQM
Updated at: 1629 PST, Monday, August 29, 2011
| ||
KARACHI: Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza on Sunday, resigned as senior minister of Sindh, vice president of PPP Sindh and as an MPA after developing serious differences with the government and party leadership. His resignation was accepted immediately by Sindh Chief Minister, Qaim Ali Shah.
In an explosive emergency press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Mirza said he would remain loyal to the party but lashed out at federal interior minister, Rehman Malik. He called the interior minister a compulsive and incorrigible liar, who he said was hand in glove with killers in Karachi. Rehman Malik: Venting his wrath at Rehman Malik, he said that Malik was hand in glove with the killers in Karachi and that he (Mirza) had proof in this regard, which he wanted to present before the Army chief, ISI and the prime minister. He said when the PM recently chaired a ‘forced session’ of the Sindh cabinet at the CM House in the evening, around 22 minutes later, Rehman Malik called Governor Sindh and MQM leader Anis Qaimkhani. He said Malik then embraced and kissed Mirza and told him he fully supported him. He said when the PM summoned him to his chamber, Rehman Malik said that Mirza had done injustice with the MQM and due to his (Mirza’s) attitude Malik had lost his best friend Altaf Hussain. Mirza said Rehman Malik was a “100 per cent compulsive liar.” He said Malik could have been a better politician and administrator if only he told 50 percent less lies. He opined that there was a method to the madness of Rehman Malik who supported the party of Altaf Bhai to protect his own interests. He said if this country suffered losses, Rehman Malik should be held responsible because ‘he was the greatest enemy of Pakistan.’ He said Malik had no stakes in this country as his family lived in England. Mirza said he did not consider Malik the killer of Benazir Bhutto but he (Malik) had failed to protect Benazir as a Jiyala. Later that night while participating in a special episode of Geo News program ‘Capital Talk’, Mirza said he had reached his tipping point because Rehman Malik was trying to free the killers of police commandos recently killed in Karachi. He said that one Kamran Madhuri, who was involved in the ambush of the police commandos vehicle, had been arrested in an injured condition along with two other accomplices. Mirza claimed that Malik had fabricated a false case against Madhuri and others and wanted to move them to Islamabad under the pretext of investigations for this case but in reality wanted to facilitate their release or escape from there. Accusations against MQM: In another major charge, Mirza first held the holy Quran over his head and then accused MQM chief, Altaf Hussain of being in cahoots with the Americans in a conspiracy to break up Pakistan. Swearing on the Holy Quran, Mirza said Altaf Hussain invited him and senior minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq to his London office. When they were on their way to meet Altaf, they received a message that their scheduled meeting had been delayed since Altaf was himself preparing ‘Haleem’ for them. Mirza said they first held a meeting with Altaf which was also attended by the governor Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ebad, Dr Farooq Sattar and Anis Qaimkhani. Later, Altaf Hussain asked all the other MQM leaders to leave. He said he and Pir Mazhar were exchanging views about target killings with Altaf Hussain when he suddenly switched on a radio-like device in the room, saying their conversation might be recorded by the M15. Mirza said Altaf Hussain then told them that America had hatched a plan to break up Pakistan and he had come to know about it from well-connected people. Altaf Hussain told Mirza and Pir Mazhar that “he and his party had decided to support this American plan and therefore I (Altaf) will not stop the killing of Pakhtuns”, Mirza said, adding that he did not want to sit with a leader who wanted to destroy Pakistan at the behest of a foreign country. Mirza said he was in possession of letter, which purportedly Altaf Hussain had written to the then British Premier Tony Blair in 2001, offering to bring out hundreds of thousands of people in Karachi in support of any initiative or need of Tony Blair. At the end of his letter, Altaf Hussain urged Tony Blair to get the ISI disbanded before “it created more Osamas”. Mirza said it was instead the extra efforts and sacrifices of the Army and ISI that Pakistan was still intact. Mirza alleged that the MQM was involved in the killing of Geo reporter, Wali Babar. He said other alleged killers had been detained while one, Liaquat, was still missing. Mirza said besides him the MQM had also targeted President Asif Ali Zardari by sending letters to foreign diplomats. He said 15 persons were killed in the city and life was paralysed following Mirza’s ‘provocative statement’ but things suddenly turned normal when an order came from London. Mirza said he did not think that the MQM enjoyed 100 percent support of the people of Karachi and Hyderabad. He said the MQM got its mandate through manipulation and through the barrel of the gun while those whose mandate was snatched were the victims and oppressed like him. He said the MQM enjoyed 50 percent mandate because of the innocence and simplicity of citizens. Mirza said the MQM developed differences with him when in a Sindh cabinet meeting he refused to give an official plot on M.A. Jinnah Road worth Rs5 billion to the MQM and when he recruited 10,000 cops in the Sindh police, none of them being MQM sympathisers. He said he opposed the recruitment of MQM supporters in the police because one such cop, Ishtiaq Policewala, was involved in the killing of several policemen. Zulfiqar said the MQM also started opposing him when, in closed-door meetings, he talked against the MQM. Supreme Court: Mirza also urged the chief justice, who had taken suo moto notice of the target killings in Karachi, to summon him before the bench so he could provide it with exhaustive documentary evidence. While he was clearly in an unsparing mood he appreciated the role of the Army and ISI whose extra efforts, according to him, had ensured the survival of the country. CPLC Chief: The former home minister accused CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy of being biased and partial. He said the CPLC, which was the gift of Benazir Bhutto to the city, was supposed to be an apolitical body. But Ahmed Chinoy was a member of the Khidmat-e-Khalq wing of the MQM. He said Chinoy was appointed on the insistence of the Sindh governor and a phone call also came from London in his favour. Mirza said when he took charge the number of kidnapped persons was 70 and came down to 17 when he left the home ministry. “But if you talk to Ahmed Chinoy, he will exaggerate the figure of kidnapped persons,” Mirza said, adding that the CPLC knew who was demanding extortion and forced Fitra but its chief, whose credentials were dubious, would never tell the true story. Lyari Operation: To a question about the Rangers operation in Lyari and discovery of two torture cells there, Zulfiqar Mirza said torture cells were also discovered during the operation of Gen. Naseerullah Babar and during another operation carried out by the Nawaz Sharif government following the assassination of former Governor Hakeem Saeed. He said if those torture cells were bona fide, then Lyari’s torture cells are also bona fide and if those were fake, then Lyari’s cells have also fake. Mirza said Karachi has a history of violence and killings and the emergence of the People’s Amn Committee was a recent phenomenon. He said the people of Lyari were deprived people and their fault is that they called a spade a spade. However he avoided a direct reply to the question of whether the Rangers’ operation in Lyari on Sunday was the real bone of contention with the government and party leadership but hundreds of people from Lyari were demonstrating outside the KPC in Mirza’s support when he was addressing the press conference Karachi Violence: Mirza said he sought 15 days from his party leadership to restore peace in the city but was not given a free hand. He said he had offered his party leadership that they could hang him and seize all his property if he failed to maintain law and order in the metropolis. Mirza admitted that he felt himself morally responsible for whatever had happened in the city in the last three-and-a-half years. He defended his performance as Sindh home minister, saying he appointed honest police officers and discarded the practice of ‘selling’ the police stations. He said he gave Rs30 million as awards to policemen from his own pocket and also provided Rs5 million from his pocket to get Satish Anand released from Taliban captivity. REACTION TO MIRZA’S STATEMENTS Rehman Malik: Interior Minister, Rehman Malik denied all allegations leveled against him by Zulfiqar Mirza. He said he was fighting a war against terrorists and had never talked to any target killers. He said Zulfiqar Mirza was an emotional person and called him his younger brother. MQM: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Coordination Committee said on Sunday that it was because of PPP leader Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza's patronage of killers, terrorists, extortionists and kidnappers that he kept silent when the Rangers carried out an operation in other parts of Karachi, except Lyari. A joint meeting of the MQM Coordination Committee was simultaneously held in Karachi and London after Mirza's press conference. The committee strongly condemned the allegations leveled by Mirza, calling them false, malicious and disparaging. In a statement, the MQM committee said when the Rangers moved against criminal elements in Lyari, Zulfiqar Mirza started criticising Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who was overseeing the operation. The committee said it amply demonstrated that Mirza was directly involved in the bloodbath in Karachi. The committee demanded that President Asif Ali Zardari and the senior leadership of the PPP take serious note of the absurd allegations and explain the party's position. The MQM committee asserted it was Zulfiqar Mirza who was aiding and abetting killers, terrorists, kidnappers, dacoits and other criminals involved in heinous offences. It said the operations against killers, terrorists, kidnappers and hardened criminals involved in heinous crimes must continue. US Embassy: The US Embassy in Pakistan has said that the statement of senior minister of Sindh Zulfiqar Mirza about Altaf Hussain conspiring with the US to break up Pakistan is beyond comprehension. The embassy, while abstaining from issuing any comment or giving a reaction to Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegation regarding the disintegration of Pakistan by the US, said that his charge was beyond understanding and a reply would be given after detailed consideration.

Working Women Who Try to Be ‘Supermom’ May Be More Depressed – TIME Healthland
You know all that maternal hand-wringing over staying home with the kids versus going back to work? Well, working seems to translate into less depression for mothers, but to really guard against symptoms, it's important to kiss the supermom façade goodbye.
New research finds that working mothers who believe that home and office can be seamlessly juggled are at greater risk for depression than their more realistic maternal colleagues who accept they can't do it all.

Could Dengue-Resistant Mosquitoes Help Fight Disease? – TIME Healthland
Scientists have made a promising advance for controlling dengue fever, a tropical disease spread by mosquito bites. They've rapidly replaced mosquitoes in the wild with skeeters that don't spread the dengue virus.
More than 50 million people a year get the dengue virus from being bitten by infected mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical areas, including Southeast Asia. It can cause debilitating high fever, severe headaches, and pain in the muscles and joints, and lead to a potentially fatal complication. There's no vaccine or specific treatment....

Marriage and divorce are life-changing events, the effects of which are evident in innumerable ways — including on the bathroom scale.
Both marriage and divorce appear to lead to weight gain among couples, but each occasion affects men and women differently, according to a new study. Researchers from Ohio State University found that women tended to gain more weight than men after marriage, while after a divorce, men's girth expanded more than women's.

kind thoughts work miraculously. If the individuals think sympathetically for themselves and their world, the world wouldn't be like that as it is now. So, lets hope the best to happen to the individuals, means the whole global population because each individual is the part of the former. If the whole world is in good condition our life would become charmer than what it is now.

Manufacturing Happiness
Welcome to A.R.Shams's 'Creative Living Spirit' Reflection Series of Press & Online Speeches, Consultations & Publications Worldwide!
A non-stop manufacturing plant that produces happiness is an essential need. That brings peace and heavenly joy.
I know a man at his 80's who on being asked, "what keeps you in fresh and joyful mood that often I noted?"
He just laughed in the presence of his spouse 70's, who too smiled staring at him and he said, "Look! I have a small house. We are 10 members living together in it since long. I could be unhappy for that, yet I am happy when I think thus that there are many others who have not this much too. I find them happy. So I promised to myself to keep happier than those who have less than I did. My spouse shares my feelings about life. I love her. She loves me more than, I believe, I do her. Our descendents have picked up this great idea of keeping happy and working on. Our ancestors except a very few lived a remarkable happy joyful life keeping others around happy too."
Further, he said, "If in case I crave for anything I don't have I try my utmost to achieve that. However, if I can not get that much I desire, then I do not discourage myself. Rather, I change my thought condition saying to myself, "Nature may consider the whole of what I wised to have, may not be reasonable for me."
